Last March 30, the international spokesperson of Youth Advocates for Climate Action Philippines (YACAP), the Philippine chapter of the Fridays for Future movement, Mitzi Jonelle Tan met King Charles III of the UK and President Frank-Walter Steinmeier of Germany alongside climate activists Elizabeth Wathuti from Kenya and Licypriya Kangujam from India.
Mitzi talked about the current Mindoro oil spill in the Philippines and made it clear the corporations behind the oil spill must be held accountable as well as the need for Global North countries like the UK to provide climate finance as reparations to countries dealing with the impacts of colonialism making us more vulnerable to the climate crisis.
YACAP calls on those in the energy industry to transition to renewable sources of energy, and start phasing out oil- and coal-powered facilities. The group also calls on the Philippine government to act with urgency to address the long-term impacts of the oil spill and prioritize the development of the country’s science and technology so that the Filipino people can maximize and develop local renewable energy plants.
YACAP is currently holding donations for the communities impacted by the oil spill and to hold a fact finding mission in the area with other environmental groups.
