The climate crisis is a pressing issue that needs immediate action. The rising temperatures, natural disasters, food and water scarcity, displacement, etc., are all effects of using an excessive amount of fossil fuels. Fossil fuels are needed in power generation, manufacturing industries, even as simple as the vehicles we use and ride to the consumption of product goods. According to Igini M. (2023), the fashion industry produces up to 92 million tonnes of clothes, and by 2030, the industry’s global emissions will increase by 60%. That’s a lot of clothes that end up in landfills while the Earth becomes hotter!
The fashion industry has progressed since the 19th century, it has paved a way for artists to express themselves creatively and serve as a statement for others. But the increase in fast fashion has raised sustainability and exploitation concerns. The “affordable” nature of fast fashion is achieved by industries making labor workers inconsequential and prioritizing fast, low-cost production, often mistreating the workers. They are responsible for 8-10% of global gas emissions and about 20% of the global water pollution (European Parliament, 2024).
But of course, there are still ways to look fashionable while keeping it eco-friendly! Fashion is important for self-expression and identity – it is a form of expression that goes beyond bounds. It can represent culture and tradition. Fashion can be used to advocate for political and societal change. It is significant for self-empowerment.

Ways to be Fashionably Green and Effortlessly Cool!
- SAY NO TO FAST FASHION
- Fast fashion industries prioritize profit over people. Not only does it violate human rights, but it also flouts the environmental issues that it causes.
- LOCAL OVER IMPORTATION
- Support local brands and small businesses that prioritize quality and sustainability with a smaller carbon footprint.
- THRIFT AND SECOND LIFE
- Shop second-hand and give clothes a second life. Support ukay-ukay or participate in clothing swap events.
- UPCYCLE YOUR STYLE
- Let your creativity shine and D.I.Y! Give your clothes a second life and restyle or upcycle your clothes.
- CONSCIOUS CONSUMPTION IS CHIC
- Opt for eco-friendly brands that prioritize sustainability and for timeless fashion pieces. This avoids having to replace clothing pieces often! Be mindful with product consumption – consider how they are made and manufactured.

Fashion is a multifaceted aspect that is important for our identity, culture, self-expression, and more. As youths and people of society, we can advocate our beliefs through fashion. True sustainability transcends the quality and eco-friendly material and considers fair labor practices. Awareness leads to action that becomes influential change.
