Statement of YACAP on the Recent Visit of US Secretary of State and Defense

Youth Advocates for Climate Action Philippines does NOT welcome the US Secretary of State, Blinken and US Secretary of Defense Austin to the Philippines as they meet with our leaders. Those two secretaries are both complicit in the genocide in Gaza and in imperial occupation all over the globe. They We denounce the welcome of President Marcos Jr. for these two secretaries as they parade the “partnership” of the Philippines and the United States of America as “progress”. These meetings are part of the imperialist agenda of the US in the region. We believe that this is not a genuine partnership and is part of a larger interest to provoke China and use the Philippines’ resources for the gain of the US. The $500 million military financing for the Philippines will only be used for Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement sites and to buy secondhand military weapons and machinery that will only further cause environmental degradation and displacement of Filipinos. This amount of money that could have been used for adaptation in the Philippines is used on military financing while we have seen the US’s pledges for the Loss and Damage Fund is a measly $17.5 million. It is clear that the United States only cares about war, conflict and profit. We call for an end of the schemes of US imperialism and we call for the junking of the existing partnerships VFA-EDCA! Put money for climate action and not for war and occupation!
