YACAP is in #COP28 — this year’s UN Climate Summit! ![]()
Our national coordinator, Alab Mirasol Ayroso, and our international spokesperson, Mitzi Jonelle Tan, are representing YACAP as they demand for climate justice alongside other youth leaders across the globe.
This year they are telling world leaders to choose #PeopleNotProfit. Some of the themes they’re focusing on are the fossil fuel phase-out, climate finance for the just transition, renewables, and climate reparations, especially for Loss and Damages, and anti-militarization, peace, and upholding human rights.
UN Climate summit is at its halfway point and there’s still a lot to push forward and put pressure on.
On day 1, we had the Loss and Damage fund operationalized and pledges have flowed in. This is a monumental victory thanks to the decades of clamour of civil society. We need Global North leaders to step up on pledges and ensure that climate finance is in the form of grants and not loans, additional and not reallocated.
This 2nd week we need to watch over and push for a fossil fuel phaseout deal with clear measurable targets in the short term and long term. Petro states are currently blocking and pitting the goals to smaller countries. We need to see national climate plans from our government and concrete measurable goals for adaptation.
There needs to be better climate finance pledges, it is disappointingly struggling to hit 100 billion USD while military expenses this year reach 2.2 trillion USD. For the bombings alone in Gaza, imperialist countries have at least spent more than 2 billion USD.
The planet is on fire, our country is drowning. We need our leaders to choose people and planet. We need to cease fires now. The youth and the people are watching.
